WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS

Make a sewing machine cover with them!

I originally had another idea in mind for my sewing machine cover, a mix of rainbow squares with some quilting. However, as soon as I saw this fabric I loved it and knew it would be covering my sewing machine soon. My idea was to make a reversible cover, not with the intent to use both sides, but to have some fabric protecting the cover on the inside. Most of the tutorials I read showed how to make the cover with an outer fabric and wadding on the inside only. I didn't think this was a good idea for me, since the wadding would probably catch on parts of the machine.

I'm not going to lie, this was a b*tch to put together! First I made it too big, luckily I started with the lining, so this was an easy fix. I unpicked and adjusted the sizing. Then I repeated this new sizing adjustment to my outer fabric before sewing.

Matching the outer and lining together was a little tricky but I managed to get it lined up fairly well. The hardest part to the cover was the bias binding. I've used bias once before on the Wiksten tank I made recently, but it was put together differently.

I read a few tutorials for joining the bias ends, but I couldn't work it out, I probably should have practiced on some scraps first. That's not really my style though, I do like to 'just wing it' with a lot of things. It can be very frustrating, but I do learn a lot from my mistakes and wins!

Once I figured out how to join the ends, the bottom of the cover came together well. This was not the same for the handle hole! Firstly, the hole was too small for adding bias as a beginner. The inside corners were a nightmare but thanks to this tutorial I managed ok in the end.

Overall, I'm really happy with the final product. I love the fabric, it fits over my machine well, and it will do the job of protecting the machine from dust etc. I even added a pocket for the cords and foot or other things if needed when transporting!

I'm not going to show you a close up of the binding on the inside - it's a bit of mess!

Next, I'd like to make a thread bin for all those horrible clingy threads that hang around!
