FIRE

It was only a few days ago that we remembered Black Saturday and all the lives that were taken. And now, our state is on fire again. We've had some really hot, dry and windy days, and as a result there are fires all around. A number have been deliberately lit, as usual, which is really sad and makes me really disappointed that there are people who think it's fun to do this, and cause this much devastation.

On the other hand, Australia has evolved with fire. The majority of our vegetation requires fire to release seeds for new growth. Fire creates a mosaic of vegetation ages which is beneficial for numerous bird, mammal and reptiles species who require different aged plants and trees for their habitat. Can you tell I have spent some time studying this topic (nearly two years for my honours work!)?

However, it's mostly farmland and homes that are being destroyed around the Melbourne area, because some one thought it would be a great idea to start a fire and watch shit burn. It is so terrible, and my heart goes out to all those who are being affected. My cousin just bought a new house last week in a suburb that was very close to being on fire, they are ok though, which is great. I really hope the wind dies down soon and the temperature drops, so everyone affected can have some relief.

On our way to my parents place today, my brother and I stopped to take some photos of the smoke from fires burning east of Beveridge, VIC.
